Full Moon Bush Cabins, so named because of the spectacular view to the eastern horizon when the Moon rises in all its monthly splendour. The three bush camp AFrame thatched cottages sit on a slope down to the river. They can accommodate 11 or 12, and we've just added another unit with two more beds. Cormorant Cabin, sleeping 4, perches on a rocky outcrop, just like the bird it's named after. We only let the three cabins of the main camp to groups, but Cormorant is a self contained chalet that can be taken on its own. Ideal for outdoor living, the camp has a deep "mountain pool" set among rocks, a lapa and a fire circle.
A Walk on "Our" Island
It's not exactly OUR island but because it's opposite Otters Haunt no-one except us and our guests ever go there. The island belongs to the state. The walk of about a kilometre is so filled with interest and pretty groves that you just want to sit or wander slowly taking it all in. The beautiful amaryllis pincushions are in spring bloom and the river is at its sparkling best. What a pleasure to be able to get out into this natural paradise, leaving all cares behind!
Magnificent Dome Hikes
From Otters Haunt on the banks of the Vaal
There are short, easy walks and longer trails. On our property, and on the river islands, you can walk through forests, clamber over rocks, cross streams and find your way back! Further afield there are amazing view of the inner Dome and surrounding Bergland of the meteorite crater. Our expert guide will explain what you are seeing and how it all happened - long ago, but this remains the world's oldest and largest visible impact crater.
Hikes from an hour to a few hours, half-day, full day. Stay over in our comfy bush camp, chalets or riverside guest house.
School educationals at Otters Haunt
We all need to find our way in life - and across the world. A primer on navigation, run for schools, forms part of our educational adventure programme. 1, 2 and 3 day programmes run at our base, Otters Haunt, near Parys on the Vaal River, just over an hour from Johannesburg.
