The Suzuki Grand Vitara (GV) has always been emblematic of adventure and dependability. It's the blend of the old and new, combining Suzuki's storied legacy with modern innovations, that makes the GV an evergreen marvel.
However, the transition from a rugged SUV to what some might label a "softroader" in its latest iteration might not sit well with every enthusiast. Still, there's more than what meets the eye.
Under the Hood: Beyond Aesthetics
The new Grand Vitara has been reborn, reflecting a fresh platform and powertrain. Assembled in India, Suzuki Auto SA offers this beauty in a 5-derivative lineup, stretching from the 1.5 GL manual to the sophisticated 1.5 Hybrid GLX AllGrip flagship. The range, starting at an appealing R339,900, promises versatility for every budget.
The 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, a staple in many of Suzuki's offerings, powers all the derivatives. The flagship model is paired with a mild-hybrid system that prioritizes fuel efficiency over performance, boasting a commendable average consumption of 5.6 L/100 km.
Embracing Space and Comfort
The new GV might seem like a formidable beast, but its dimensions remain humble. Yet, with a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, the Vitara Brezza, it promises enhanced rear legroom. It comfortably houses four adults, although taller passengers might yearn for more headroom. The luggage space might have reduced slightly to 310 litres, but it can still expand generously when the rear seats are folded.
The interior is a manifestation of durability and simplicity. Suzuki offers two trim levels – GL and GLX – with the entry-level versions impressively equipped for their price tag.
On the Road with the Grand Vitara
Our testing of the 1.5 Hybrid GLX AllGrip encompassed both gravel and off-road terrains. While the performance might not get your pulse racing, especially during overtaking with added weight, the 6-speed automatic transmission certainly stands out.
On gravel, the Grand Vitara shines, boasting exemplary steering response and body control. With 210 mm of ground clearance, it's equipped to tackle those challenging terrains, although few may push it to its limit. On the asphalt, the entry-level GL, powered by a 4-speed automatic transmission, is tailored for the urban dweller. Its nimble nature, coupled with the 1.5-litre engine's zest, ensures a smooth city drive.
A Fusion of Designs
The GV's exterior is an artistic blend of Suzuki's and Toyota's design languages. Its multi-level grille, 3-point daytime running lamps, and a sculpted bumper capture attention instantaneously. Its boxy side profile and futuristic rear, adorned with a thin lighting strip, make a statement.
The interior is a step up from its predecessor, aiming to captivate a broader audience. The touchscreen offers wireless connectivity options, and the chrome and glossy black accents add a touch of sophistication. The GLX models are a notch above, offering features like a wireless charging tray, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.
Suzuki’s Grand Bet
The Suzuki Grand Vitara has undergone significant evolution, integrating elements from its predecessors and modern design philosophies. Its new direction, however, could be a double-edged sword, appealing to new fans while possibly alienating purists.
For those inclined towards more challenging off-roading experiences, the Jimny remains the go-to option in Suzuki's lineup. On the other hand, families and city dwellers might find the new GV tailored to their needs, offering the best of both worlds.
In Potchefstroom, where roads can vary from urban pavements to rugged terrains, the Grand Vitara stands as a testament to Suzuki's commitment to innovation while staying true to its legacy. Whether this bet pays off in the long run remains to be seen. But for now, the Grand Vitara drives into the sunset, with a promise of many adventures ahead.
