The six-seater SUV is more than just an addition to Suzuki’s ever-growing line-up. It's a testament to the brand's innovation, aligning with the burgeoning small crossover trend, while offering superior family comfort akin to that of the Grand Vitara.
First Impressions
From the onset, the XL6 demands attention with its commanding stance. "Think Big" isn't just a motto for this vehicle; it's an embodiment of its design and function. Although built on the same platform as the Ertiga, the XL6 carves its niche, distinguishing itself with bolder aesthetics and enhanced features. The GLX model, in particular, flaunts an off-white fabric finish on the cabin’s upper half, contrasting beautifully with the dark surfaces on the door panels and dashboard. And, for those with a preference for luxury, the GLX offers leather-wrapped seats and steering wheel.
Tech and Comfort
Despite its elegance, the XL6 doesn’t skimp on functionality. The 7-inch touchscreen may not boast a plethora of features, but its user-friendly design ensures easy navigation. A 4.2-inch digital display complements the touchscreen. Modern-day essentials such as rear air-conditioning, three 12V accessory sockets, keyless entry, cruise control, and a reverse camera come standard, indicating Suzuki’s commitment to providing a blend of luxury and practicality.
Performance and Drive
Under the hood, the XL6 houses the familiar K15B petrol four-cylinder engine, generating a respectable 77 kW at 6,000 r/min and 138 N.m at 4,400 r/min. On the move, especially during my drive from Lanseria airport to La Joya wellness centre and onward to the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit, the XL6 showcased its mettle.
The McPherson front struts coupled with coil springs on both axles cushioned the harshest of road imperfections, ensuring a smooth ride.
Versatility Defined
What makes the XL6 stand out, apart from its driving dynamics, is its seating arrangement. While the third-row spacing might feel a tad cramped for taller adults, it’s perfect for children or average-sized individuals. Moreover, the luggage space is impressive, ranging from 209L with all rows up, to a whopping 692L with the second and third row folded.
Competition and Pricing
In the fiercely competitive market, the XL6 is poised against the likes of the Mitsubishi Xpander and Toyota Rumion. Yet, Suzuki manages to edge ahead with diverse specifications, competitive pricing, and sheer brand trust. The XL6 provides a compelling proposition for potential buyers.
Brand Evolution
The Suzuki XL6 1.5 GLX is not just another vehicle in Suzuki's lineup; it's a reflection of the brand’s evolution. Balancing aesthetics, functionality, and performance, the XL6 emerges as a top contender for those seeking a blend of an SUV and an MPV. Whether you’re navigating the rugged terrains of Potchefstroom or cruising on the highway, the XL6 promises a drive that’s both thrilling and comfortable.
