Flo-Tek North West - Where there’s always something in the pipeline
Article by Johané van Dyk - Journalist at The Go-To Guy
We sat down with Monique Terblanche, the Director of Flo-Tek North West, and she gave us some insight into this well-established pipe manufacturer right here in the heart of Potchefstroom.
A brief history
Founded in 1998 in Botswana, the Flo-Tek Group has grown over the past 25 years into a leading and respected brand in Southern Africa's manufacturing sector. Specialising in PVC, CPVC, and HDPE plastic pipes and fittings, as well as rotomolded products and packaging materials, Flo-Tek has expanded its network to include operations in Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Namibia, and Zambia.
Today, it stands as the largest plastic pipe manufacturer in Southern Africa. Flo-Tek's dedication to quality ensures customer satisfaction, which in turn enhances customer loyalty, increases market share, and drives growth.
Product Range and Innovation
Flo-Tek manufactures a variety of plastic pipes, including OPVC, MPVC, UPVC, underground sewer pipes, and HTP pipes and fittings. These products serve several industries such as mining, civil engineering, irrigation, building, and plumbing. Recently, Flo-Tek has introduced significant innovations in its product line.
A couple of months ago, the company began manufacturing OPVC pipes, positioning itself as one of the leading manufacturers of OPVC pipes in South Africa. They currently produce OPVC pipes up to 400mm in diameter, and with a new machine arriving soon, they will be able to manufacture OPVC pipes up to 800mm. To ensure the quality and durability of its products, Flo-Tek adheres to both SABS and Jaswic standards.

Market Presence and Competitiveness
Flo-Tek maintains its competitive edge in the market through strong customer relations and service, consistently striving to deliver quality products. The biggest challenge currently facing the plastic pipe manufacturing industry in Southern Africa is the reliance on a single raw material supplier, Sasol, which determines pricing across the entire market.
This lack of alternative suppliers means manufacturers have no room to negotiate special prices, forcing them to purchase at the given rate or import from other countries, which can result in substandard quality. Despite this challenge, Flo-Tek sees opportunities for growth and expansion by continuously seeking new, innovative products. They have several projects in development to meet current market needs and are committed to expanding their product range.
Technological Advancements
Technology has significantly impacted Flo-Tek's manufacturing processes and product development. The company invests considerable time and energy in the global market to ensure that their machinery and technology are on par with international manufacturers. They utilise state-of-the-art technology to maintain high standards. Flo-Tek is particularly excited about an upcoming technological advancement: the arrival of a new OPVC machine. This new equipment will enable Flo-Tek to become the only manufacturer in South Africa capable of producing OPVC pipes up to 800mm in size.
Community and Social Responsibility
Flo-Tek actively contributes to the local communities where it operates by supporting various initiatives and organisations. They take pride in their local involvement and work closely with individuals and community groups to make a positive impact. For instance, Flo-Tek collaborates with OFM, a prominent regional radio station, to support community events and outreach programs.
Additionally, they partner with Round Table Potchefstroom, an organisation known for its charitable efforts and community service projects, to help address local needs. Flo-Tek also supports PAWS Potchefstroom, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the welfare of animals, by providing resources and assistance to enhance the care and protection of animals in the area. Through these partnerships, Flo-Tek demonstrates its commitment to fostering a strong, supportive community environment.
Future Plans
The company's strategic goals for the next five years focus on constant growth, ensuring they never stand still and continuously add new products to their lineup. They are dedicated to expanding their product line and are actively exploring new markets. One significant area of interest is the hose manufacturing sector, including mining hoses and dragline hoses.
These products are critical for various industries, and Flo-Tek aims to become a key player in this market. Additionally, there are several other exciting projects in development that Monique hinted at but did not disclose in detail. These projects reflect Flo-Tek's commitment to innovation and their strategic vision for sustained growth and market expansion. Through these initiatives, Flo-Tek aims to strengthen its market position and continue delivering high-quality, innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of their customers.
Customer Relations
Flo-Tek ensures customer satisfaction and builds long-term relationships with its clients through honesty, high-quality products, and excellent service. They prioritise being reliable and consistently delivering on their promises, which fosters trust and loyalty among their customers. The motivation for Flo-Tek and its team to continuously strive for excellence stems from a strong sense of teamwork.
They believe in the philosophy that "there's no 'i' in team," emphasising that success is a collaborative effort and a continuous process. For other businesses in the manufacturing sector aiming for similar success, Flo-Tek advises prioritising honesty, loyalty, and always doing your best to ensure your products meet high standards. Avoid using inferior materials, as maintaining quality is crucial for building a strong reputation and achieving long-term success.
