The Promosa Concerned Parents and Residents have organized a protest march to hand over a memorandum addressing what they claim to be unfair discrimination in the appointment of the new principal for Promosa Primary School by the North West Department of Education.
According to the School Governing Body (SGB), Mr. Leon Temanie was identified as the most suitable candidate for the principal position after a thorough interview process. He was deemed fit and proper for the role by an expert panel. However, despite the SGB’s recommendation, the District Director declined to approve Mr. Temanie’s appointment and instead appointed an individual who was not recommended by the SGB.
The advertisement for the vacancy, detailed in Circular 20/2024, stated that affirmative action would guide the selection process, specifying that the designated groups for consideration included Indians, Africans, and Coloureds. However, the appointed candidate does not belong to any of these designated groups.
This decision has led to discontent among community members, who view it as discriminatory against the race of the recommended candidate and against them as a whole. Furthermore, the District Director has not provided reasons for rejecting the SGB’s recommendation and has not engaged with the community on the matter.
In response, the community has decided to escalate the matter by seeking the intervention of the North West MEC of Education.
To highlight their concerns and demand accountability, they have planned a protest march:
Protest Details:
Date: Tuesday, February 4, 2025
Time: 08:00 AM
Starting Point: Casper Shop, Bloemtjie Street, Promosa, Potchefstroom
March Route: From Casper Shop to Promosa Primary School
Memorandum Handover: 11:00 AM at Promosa Primary School
The community asserts that the protest is aimed at addressing what they consider an act of unfair discrimination, which they believe contradicts the principles enshrined in the Bill of Rights. The Constitution guarantees equality for all races under the law and protection against unfair discrimination.
