“A powerful woman is a heat-resistant and storm-bracing calibre. There is nothing she cannot handle” - Gift Gugu Mona
In the heart of South Africa, a remarkable organisation is making waves by revolutionising the orphan care sector. Mosaic has emerged as a beacon of hope for orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) across Africa. With six sites across South Africa (and counting), Mosaic is on a mission to ensure that every orphan and vulnerable child on the continent finds a loving and caring family that empowers them to realise their God-given potential.
Founded in 2008, Mosaic has grown from its roots in South Africa to establish centres in Potchefstroom, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Paarl Valley, and even ventured beyond borders to Germany. The organisation's growth reflects not only its impact but also the genuine love and support people have for the cause.
A Three-Pronged Approach
Mosaic's unique three-pronged approach sets it apart from other orphan-care organisations. By combining direct OVC-care, partnerships with other OVC-care organisations, and industry outreach, Mosaic has created a systemic approach to effect meaningful change while keeping its boots on the ground.
Mosaic's families reside in homes surrounding community centres in South Africa. The organisation then extends its impact by partnering with local organisations across the country, providing them with mentorship, blueprints, guideposts, and systems needed to implement Mosaic's OVC-care model. This collaborative effort reaches far beyond individual communities, impacting the entire orphan care sector.
Family Development Program
Central to Mosaic's approach is its Family Development Program, a comprehensive three-layered initiative comprising Parent, Child, and Job Readiness/Skills Development programs. Mosaic identifies families fostering or adopting at least two orphans and serves them through community centres. The program focuses on education, employment, sustained flourishing and housing.
Education initiatives include access to higher-quality schools, after-school programs, talent development, emotional and spiritual care, and college scholarships. For foster parents lacking sustainable employment, Mosaic provides job training and coaching, ensuring they find reliable employment. Continuing life skills training and community support groups contribute to sustained flourishing. In cases of inadequate housing, Mosaic steps in to build homes with essential amenities, fostering a sense of pride and ownership.
Incubation and Acceleration Program
Mosaic's commitment to collaboration is evident in its Incubation and Acceleration Program. Recognising that one organisation alone cannot serve all OVC and their families, Mosaic partners with like-minded organisations through this program. The first partnership, Mosaic Deben, is independently registered, implementing the Mosaic Model in the Northern Cape. Through partnerships, Mosaic aims to reach more OVC and caregivers, helping them realise their God-given potential.
Industry Outreach Platform
Mosaic extends its impact beyond direct care through the Industry Outreach Platform. This platform builds systems and facilitates communities of best practice. Notably, it has served as the launchpad for Wellbi, a software platform enabling orphan care organisations to track well-being data and make informed program decisions.

Made by Mosaic: A Dignified Initiative
"Made by Mosaic" is not just a job creation initiative; it's a testament to Mosaic's commitment to dignified and sustainable support for foster parents. Each employee is a foster mom, caring for two or more orphaned and vulnerable children. By supporting Made by Mosaic, you contribute to the well-being of these families, making a tangible impact on their lives.
In summary, Mosaic stands as a trailblazer in the orphan care space, challenging conventional approaches and embracing a holistic, collaborative model. With its innovative programs, unwavering commitment, and a team of empowered women at the helm, Mosaic is weaving a tapestry of hope, love, and empowerment for orphaned and vulnerable children across Africa.
