What started as an initiative between two colleagues has grown into an important communication and broadcasting platform for the residents of Potchefstroom.
Founded in 2019, the First Responders Facebook page alone already has more than 9,000 members - not to mention the WhatsApp groups. The driving force behind this initiative is to keep the residents of Potchefstroom informed of relevant, time-sensitive events in town. One of the founders is also a paramedic himself and when there is an 'obstacle' or emergency in town, either of them is one of the first on the scene to report and inform the public.
In a small town, first responders are of utmost importance, forming the heartbeat of the community. This dedicated group of individuals, including paramedics, firefighters, and police officers, stands ready to respond immediately to emergencies and provide protection. They know the people in the community personally, contributing to a sense of security and community spirit. First responders are not only saviours in times of crisis but also pillars of support for the community in moments of joy and celebration. Their dedication, courage, and collaboration strengthen the bonds within the town, ensuring that they are always there to help and protect, even in the smallest moments of need.
Over time, the founders built up contacts in the police, emergency service and security sectors which are crucial. The members of First Responders strive to report on events that are happening at the moment. "It doesn't help if you only read about an accident or incident that took place in the morning on Facebook later that evening."
Additionally, first responders in small towns may engage in community outreach programs, safety education initiatives, and disaster preparedness training, fostering a proactive approach to maintaining the well-being of their neighbours. Their commitment to both the safety and the overall welfare of the community highlights the indispensable role they play in the fabric of small-town life.
On behalf of the Potchefstroom community, we would like to express our gratitude to the founders of this wonderful initiative, the different sectors that make up the first responders and the community members who are actively contributing to this page and keeping our town updated and safe on a daily basis.
