Potchefstroom, 18 August 2024 – Residents of the Greater Potchefstroom area are being urged to remain vigilant as reports of possible protest action scheduled for Monday, 19 August 2024, continue to circulate. According to information received on various platforms as well as the Buzzer Safety App, the protests, led by community members from Ikageng, are in response to recent increases in municipal rates and services, which have sparked widespread dissatisfaction.
Background of the Protest
SANCO, along with Potchefstroom Concerned Leaders, has called for the protest, rallying support from various taxi associations. The protest is aimed at opposing the recent hikes in electricity tariffs, sewerage, water, and refuse removal charges, which have seen increases of 13% and 6% respectively. A new basic fee of R50.00 plus VAT for prepaid electricity users and R110 for conventional users has also fueled the discontent.
The organizers argue that these increases disproportionately affect the Tiokwe community, especially in comparison to the community of Ventersdorp, which reportedly consumes water and electricity free of charge.
Protest Logistics and Areas of Concern
Protestors are expected to block access routes to Potchefstroom, particularly along the N12 between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has been informed of the potential disruptions and is likely to monitor the situation closely.
As of this evening, the Dassierand-Promosa road has been closed by protestors, with reports of burning tires and stones being placed across the road to block traffic. Residents and commuters are strongly advised to avoid this route and any other areas where protest activities might be taking place.
Impact on the Community
The planned protest action may have significant implications for local businesses and workers, particularly those from Ikageng who might be unable to reach their places of employment. The organizers have emphasized that the protest is a response to what they view as unfair and unsustainable financial burdens imposed on the community.
Safety Precautions
Residents are urged to exercise caution when traveling in the Greater Potchefstroom area, especially along major routes such as the N12. It is recommended to avoid travel unless necessary and to stay updated on the situation through local news channels and social media.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The SAPS and community leaders are expected to release statements regarding the unfolding events and any potential resolutions.
Stay informed and stay safe, Potchefstroom.
