Residents of Potchefstroom continue to grapple with persistent water supply issues, including low pressure and frequent outages, as aging infrastructure and unexpected complications hinder repair efforts. The affected areas span multiple neighbourhoods, with recent incidents highlighting the severity and complexity of the problems.
Recent Incidents and Repairs
In June, residents of Dassierand faced a prolonged water outage due to a burst pipe. The repair was delayed when it was discovered that the size of the replacement clamps needed did not match the specifications of the aging asbestos pipes. Councillor Anné van Onselen reported that the required parts were only available days later, leading to extended disruptions. The repair team worked tirelessly, even through the night, to restore water to the area.
July saw another significant issue when fire hydrants near Potchefstroom Hospital were inadvertently opened during maintenance work, causing unexpected water loss. Councillor Madra de Bruin informed residents that the JB Marks Municipality was addressing the problem and urged patience as teams worked to close the hydrants and restore normal water flow.
Most recently, in October, numerous neighbourhoods began experiencing low water pressure or complete outages. Areas such as Beyers Naude between Chris Hani and Grimbeeck, Bailliepark, and Suiddorp reported significant disruptions. The issue was traced back to the Ventersdorp reservoir, a critical supply point for several communities.
Municipal Response and Communication
The municipal manager acknowledged the problems stemming from the Ventersdorp reservoir. In a message relayed by Councillor Heinricha Hodgson, it was explained that low raw water inflow from the Boskop Dam, likely due to algae blockage in the canal, was affecting reservoir levels. Maintenance teams were dispatched to address the algae growth and restore normal inflow rates.
To alleviate confusion among residents, Councillor Anné van Onselen provided a detailed explanation of the water supply system:
Vyfhoek Reservoir supplies Mooivalleipark, Van der Hoffpark, Bailliepark, Grimbeekpark, and surrounding areas.
Ventersdorp Reservoir serves Kannonierspark, Sentraal, Miederpark, and Suiddorp.
A smaller reservoir at the water purification plant supplies the Dam area, Die Bult, Heilige Akker, and Oewersig.
She emphasised that issues in one reservoir do not necessarily affect areas served by another, clarifying why some neighbourhoods experienced disruptions while others did not.
Challenges with Aging Infrastructure
The water supply issues highlight the challenges posed by Potchefstroom's aging water infrastructure. The discrepancy in pipe sizes encountered during the Dassierand repair points to outdated or poorly documented systems, complicating maintenance efforts. Additionally, reliance on older asbestos pipes poses health and safety risks for repair crews and may require specialised equipment and procedures.
Councillors' Efforts and Residents' Reactions
Ward councillors have been proactive in communicating with residents through WhatsApp groups and other channels, providing updates and seeking assistance when needed. During the hospital incident, Councillor de Bruin requested help from anyone with access to a strong enough pump to expedite repairs, illustrating the collaborative effort between officials and the community.
However, frustration among residents is palpable. Complaints about the lack of timely communication and prolonged disruptions have been voiced, with some questioning the effectiveness of the municipal response. The councillors acknowledge these concerns and assure residents that they are working diligently with municipal officials to resolve the issues.
Moving Forward
The municipality is expected to continue addressing the immediate problems while also looking at long-term solutions to prevent future disruptions. Upgrading infrastructure, improving maintenance protocols, and ensuring accurate documentation of the water supply system are critical steps that need to be taken.
Residents are encouraged to report leaks and water issues promptly and to conserve water where possible, especially during times of reduced supply. The councillors have also advised residents in higher-lying areas to anticipate longer delays in water restoration due to the nature of the supply system.
Urgent Need for Infrastructure Revitalisation
The ongoing water issues in Potchefstroom underscore the urgent need for infrastructure revitalisation and effective crisis management. While municipal teams and ward councillors are actively working to mitigate the problems, sustainable solutions will require significant investment and coordinated efforts between the municipality and the community.
