POTCHEFSTROOM - In a significant move towards infrastructure rehabilitation, the JB Marks Local Municipality, in collaboration with the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), is taking on the pervasive pothole problem along the N12 National Road. The joint initiative underscores their commitment to providing safer and more efficient road networks for the country’s motorists.
Not Just a Patch Up
Potholes, often seen as minor inconveniences, can escalate into major safety and economic concerns if not addressed in a timely manner. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, the primary objective of this project is not just to patch up, but to obliterate these potholes, ensuring long-term sustainability and safety for the road's users.
Operation Vala Zonke
In a pioneering approach to tackle this nationwide concern, the Department of Transport and SANRAL have launched the Vala Zonke "War Room." This centralized hub aims to methodically address the pothole challenge faced by countless South African roads. SANRAL, with its robust infrastructure management capabilities, has been entrusted to spearhead this campaign. The agency's pivotal role includes harmonizing all pothole-related data and leveraging technological expertise to ensure a seamless and effective execution of the project.

SANRAL, acting as the torchbearer of this campaign, has not only taken on the responsibility of streamlining data and ensuring the technical efficacy of the campaign but has also introduced a user-friendly 'Pothole App', which you can download at one of the links at the end of article
Reclaiming Our Roads
"It's not just about filling holes. It's about reclaiming our roads and ensuring the safety and satisfaction of all road users," remarked a spokesperson from SANRAL. The collaboration between the JB Marks Local Municipality and SANRAL signifies a collective resolve to uplift the standard of road infrastructure in the country.
Residents and frequent travelers along the N12 can soon expect smoother journeys, free from the jarring experience of potholes.
Challenge to Other Municipalities
Moreover, this initiative sets a promising precedent for other municipalities and regions to follow, making South Africa's roads safer, one pothole at a time.
