Discovering the Red - Knobbed Coot

Both males and females look alike, though males are generally larger, weighing between 770 - 910 g, while females range from 455 - 790 g.
Behavior and Social Structure
The Red - Knobbed Coot is less secretive than many other members of the rail family. It can often be seen swimming on open water or walking across waterside grasslands.
Despite its aggressive nature, especially during breeding season, this bird is fascinating to observe. It tends to bully intruders, even those significantly larger like the Egyptian Goose.

Breeding and Nesting
Breeding habits are a key highlight in the life of the Red - Knobbed Coot. These birds are solitary breeders, establishing territories in which they build nests.
The nest is a bulky platform constructed from reeds and plant stems, placed in shallow water. Both parents are involved in building the nest and caring for the young.
The typical clutch consists of 5 - 7 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for 18 - 25 days. The chicks are precocial, leaving the nest within a day and receiving parental care for up to 60 days.
Vocalizations
Red - Knobbed Coots are quite vocal, especially during the mating season. Their calls include a fast "kerrre", a harsh "ka - haa", and a grunting "hoot - oot".
These sounds distinguish them from their close relative, the Eurasian Coot.
Conservation
Despite a declining population due to habitat loss, the Red - Knobbed Coot is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
There is, however, an isolated and threatened population in Morocco and southern Spain. In South Africa, they are commonly found where suitable habitats exist, often in large congregations outside the breeding season.
