As the 24 November 2024 deadline approaches, Eskom urges prepaid electricity customers to ensure their meters are recoded to Key Revision Number (KRN) 2. Without this update, millions of meters won’t accept new tokens, leaving users unable to top up electricity after their current credit runs out. This critical recoding, mandated by the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA), applies to approximately 6.9 million meters in Eskom-supplied areas.
Why the Update Matters
This recoding requirement addresses a built-in expiry of Token Identifiers (TID), which prevents token reuse by assigning each token a unique code set to expire in 2024. Meters still using KRN 1 will cease to accept tokens, effectively cutting off electricity access once current credits are depleted.
How to Check Your Meter
Eskom has streamlined the process to make it quick and easy for most users. Here’s what to do:
Check Your KRN Status: Enter 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on your meter’s keypad. If the display shows KRN 2, your meter is updated. If it shows KRN 1, your meter requires recoding.
How to Update Your Meter
Purchase Credit and Enter Codes: Get a credit token from an authorized vendor, who will provide two 20-digit codes for the update. Enter these codes on your meter to complete the transition.

As Eskom and the STSA push toward a smooth transition to KRN2, these steps will help ensure continuous electricity access for prepaid users across South Africa.
