Intersection remains closed as municipal teams work to address flooding and infrastructure damage
Repair work at the site of a significant sinkhole on the corner of Eleazer and Dwars Streets in Potchefstroom has been delayed due to excessive rainfall in the area. The affected intersection remains closed until further notice, with municipal teams currently working to pump out accumulated water before further repair work can continue.

The sinkhole, which emerged following a major pipe failure, has disrupted local traffic and prompted safety concerns among residents.
According to municipal updates, the next steps in the repair process will include:
Replacing a leaking major water pipeline
Filling and stabilizing the sinkhole area
Resealing the damaged road surface

In the meantime, residents and motorists are advised to avoid the intersection and use alternative routes, particularly those who normally travel via the Piet Bosman road. Authorities have emphasized that the area remains unsafe for passage.
Several motorists have already become stuck in the mud while attempting to bypass the road closure by driving over nearby sidewalks. Residents are urged not to attempt crossing the closed section, both for their own safety and to prevent further delays in the repair timeline.

Efforts to restore the road and underground infrastructure are ongoing, with crews on site monitoring conditions and progressing with the work as weather permits.
