Humble Beginnings
Since the early 1960s, when he first dipped his toes into the vast ocean of music, Clive Bruce has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the South African music scene. Originally starting as a bass guitarist, he swiftly broadened his horizons, mastering several other instruments. The renowned Virginia Lee, famously known as the "Queen of Song" of the early '60s and Clive's stepmother, introduced him to the recording world, kindling his passion for the art.
Climbing the Charts
1970 was a watershed year for Bruce. He released the song 'Sally Sunshine,' which swiftly ascended to No. 1 on the LM Radio Top 20 and clinched a top position on the South African Top 20. Despite his success in the limelight, Bruce often operated behind the scenes, collaborating with many prominent artists of his era.
A Voice for Generations
Clive's voice became a familiar sound for many South Africans — he was the inaugural voice of 'Sarel Seemonster' in the beloved Afrikaans TV show, 'Wielie Walie'. In addition, he produced voice renditions of international hits for the popular Springbok Hits Album series.
A Record of Success
Following the success of 'Sally Sunshine,' Bruce unveiled his maiden country album in 1978, titled "Ruby, don't take your love to town." With the advent of television, Bruce propelled himself into prominence with various performances, including solo appearances and New Year Specials.
Starring On Screen
1985 marked another significant chapter in Bruce's career. He was approached to host a country music show on TV4, christened "Sing Country," which aired every Sunday night. Filmed at the Zillertal Restaurant in Pretoria, it became the longest-running South African middle-of-the-road music show of its time. This remarkable achievement earned Bruce a coveted award and the nickname "The Midnight Cowboy," believed to be humorously coined by the renowned Lance James.
Rolling Through the '90s
The '90s proved to be a bustling era for Bruce. In 1993, he graced TV1 with a video request program. Fast forward to 1996, and he released the CD 'One Last Kiss,' which bestowed upon him his first official gold album. In the same year, he tied the knot with his love, Jennifer.
