The Humble Beginnings
The journey began during their high school days when the band members first started playing music together. Originally named Ysterkoei, their raw talent shone through, clinching them several competition wins and eventually a recording contract with Paris Recording Studios. However, in 2012, they took the significant step of renaming themselves Spoegwolf and released their debut album 'Swaartekrag', marking the beginning of an era.
Musical Evolution and Recognition
'Somer', their 2015 release, showcased a track named "Glenda", a homage to South African stripper, activist, and teacher Glenda Kemp. Their hard work and dedication were evident when this record bagged the title of Best Alternative Album at the renowned Ghoema Music Awards.
The ensuing years witnessed the band's meteoric rise with albums like 'Die Donker Toring' (2017) and 'Koma' (2019). The latter, in particular, was a notable milestone, making Spoegwolf the first Afrikaans music group to secure the number one spot on Apple Music charts in South Africa.
Their collaboration with South African rock legend, Francois Van Coke, for the title track "Dagdrome in Suburbia" in 2019, further solidified their position in the music industry. Their prolificacy continued with back-to-back releases in 2020 and 2021, culminating in the albums 'Droombrief' and 'Dryf' in 2022.
Beyond The Music
While their musical journey is nothing short of impressive, what sets Spoegwolf apart is their multifaceted talents. Brothers Danie and Moskou du Toit have taken their culinary passions to the next level by opening a restaurant in Stellenbosch.
Furthermore, showcasing his artistic range, Danie du Toit has penned three poetry books: 'Warmer Voor Die Tuimeldroer', 'Sterreval', and 'Die Tuin'.
As Spoegwolf continues to rock the music charts, they are a testament to what passion, dedication, and teamwork can achieve. Their journey, from high school friends to Afrikaans rock royalty, is an inspiration for aspiring musicians across the country.
