On the 14th of August, André Lensly, a former resident of Heidelberg, returned to his old hometown to launch three of his books at a local bookstore in Heidelberg Shopping Centre.
Having lived in Heidelberg for nearly two decades, Lensly’s presence brought a sense of nostalgia to the event, reconnecting him with the community where he once thrived as a businessman.
Despite having retired seven years ago to Mossel Bay, Lensly’s deep connection to Heidelberg remains, making it the perfect setting for his literary homecoming.
A Passion That Blossomed
Lensly’s journey as a writer began as a hobby but has since evolved into a prolific career, with 37 books penned over the years.
What started as a pastime has now become a full-fledged endeavor, with Lensly dedicating his time to editing and publishing his works. His love for storytelling, nurtured over many years, has led to the release of several books, the most recent of which were showcased at his Heidelberg launch.
The three featured books—Nélia in die Gramadoelas, Glanspad of Stofpad, and Absolute Geregtigheid—were all published within the last year, marking a significant milestone in Lensly’s literary career.
Stories Rooted in Experience
Lensly’s novels are more than just fiction; they are reflections of his life’s experiences and the journeys he has undertaken. His children describe him as a romantic with a creative mind, qualities that shine through in his writing.
Each story is infused with personal insights and a deep understanding of human nature, making his characters relatable and his plots engaging.
From the rural settings of Nélia in die Gramadoelas to the complex moral dilemmas in Absolute Geregtigheid, Lensly’s works offer readers a window into his world, shaped by his own adventures and the people he has met along the way.
The Man Behind the Words
Although Lensly is now recognized as a writer, his roots are in business. Before turning to writing full-time, he ran several enterprises in Heidelberg, including Estdré Motor Spares and RJT Automotive Engineering.
His background in accounting, with a long tenure at South African Airways, has given him a unique perspective on life, one that he skillfully incorporates into his stories.
The character Mike Savage, for example, is a bookkeeper who channels his frustrations with the mundane into a quest for justice—a reflection, perhaps, of Lensly’s own transition from the corporate world to the creative one.
Looking Ahead
Even as Lensly enjoys his retirement in Mossel Bay, his creative pursuits show no signs of slowing down. With several manuscripts currently in the editing phase, including a series focused on the enigmatic Mike Savage, Lensly continues to push the boundaries of his storytelling.
Upcoming works like Dame en die Boemelaar and Shilo Koningin van Harte promise to keep his readers engaged, while his ambitions to publish five books in a single year highlight his relentless drive.
As he revisits the town where it all began, Lensly’s literary journey serves as an inspiration, proving that it’s never too late to pursue one’s passions.
