She matriculated from Hoërskool Brandwag in Benoni in 1987 and went on to earn a BA degree in Languages, specializing in Afrikaans-Dutch and Northern Sotho, from the University of Johannesburg (then RAU) in 1990.
Her academic pursuits didn’t stop there; she completed her BA Honours in Applied Linguistics (Translation) in 1991, laying a strong foundation for her future career in language and literature.
Career in Editing and Translation
Marie’s professional journey began in 1992 as a translator at Beeld, Johannesburg’s leading newspaper. Over the next two decades, she honed her skills as an editor at various institutions, including Jacklin Publishers in Midrand. Today, she works as an editor of medical and legal reports at a psychological practice in Pretoria.
Her editorial expertise extends to significant projects like the Britannica Junior Encyclopedia for Southern Africa and several editions of the Disney Yearbook, where she also authored non-fiction articles. She has edited a range of titles, including the Keuses series, the World Heritage Sites series, and several Mills & Boon romances in Afrikaans.
Breaking into Crime Fiction
Marie Lotz’s passion for writing led to the release of her debut crime novel, "Roofdier," in 2021. The gripping thriller, which follows Captain Alek Strauss of the Fiscal’s Special Investigations Unit as he tracks a ruthless serial killer, quickly became a bestseller and earned a spot on the Nielsen list of top sellers.
