Qarnita Loxton, a Cape Town native, has always called the city her home. Although she embarked on a career in law, studying at the University of Cape Town and practicing as an attorney for over a decade, her path took an unexpected turn when her eldest son was born.
This life-changing event prompted her to leave her legal career behind, and she began working as a freelance legal specialist while studying psychology.
It wasn’t until she took a short online creative writing course that she discovered her passion for writing, which eventually led to the publication of her first novel, Being Kari.
The Birth of the Being Series
Loxton’s debut novel, Being Kari, published in 2017, marked the beginning of a series that would capture the hearts of many readers.
The novel, inspired by her own experiences and the importance of female friendships, explores the complexities of intercultural relationships, a theme drawn from Loxton’s marriage to an Afrikaans man while coming from a Muslim family.
The book delves into the challenges and joys of navigating different cultural backgrounds, set against the backdrop of South African society. What started as a standalone story quickly grew into a series as Loxton found herself compelled to continue the narratives of her strong, relatable characters.
Exploring Lives and Friendships
Following the success of Being Kari, Loxton released Being Lily in 2018, followed by Being Shelley in 2020. Each novel in the series explores the lives, loves, and challenges of a group of four friends—Kari, Lily, Shelley, and Dianne.
Through these characters, Loxton delves into issues of parenting, relationships, and personal growth. The series has been praised for its honest portrayal of the ups and downs of life, with each book offering a unique perspective on the experiences of women navigating the complexities of modern life in South Africa.
The Impact of Writing During Lockdown
Being Dianne, the final book in the series, was written during the COVID-19 lockdown, a time when Loxton, like many others, faced the challenges of isolation and uncertainty.
Writing the novel became a lifeline for her, offering a sense of control and escape during a difficult period. The story touches on themes of identity, societal expectations, and the challenges of connecting with the younger generation.
Loxton’s ability to weave humour and lightness into her writing has made her books both entertaining and thought-provoking, allowing readers to reflect on important issues while enjoying the narratives.
A Voice for Empathy and Understanding
Through her Being series, Loxton has skillfully addressed social issues and encouraged readers to examine their own beliefs and biases.
Her use of humour as a tool to open conversations about diversity, identity, and societal change has resonated with many. Loxton’s writing not only entertains but also fosters empathy by highlighting the beauty and complexity of South Africa’s diverse society.
As she continues to write, Loxton remains committed to bridging generational gaps and sparking meaningful dialogue through her storytelling.
