Siya Kolisi and Rassie Erasmus Honoured at NWU
🏉🏆 🏉🏆 🏉🏆 🏉🏆 🏉🏆
Big things are happening at North-West University (NWU) Potchefstroom, and it’s all about honouring two of South Africa’s biggest rugby legends – Siya Kolisi and Rassie Erasmus.
On Monday, 24 February, the NWU Potchefstroom Campus will officially rename Dennedorp residence after Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.
The residence, which houses many of the university’s rugby players, will now be known as Siya Kolisi Residence. At the same time, a brand-new multi-sport residence on campus will be named Invictus Residence, with none other than Springbok coach Dr Rassie Erasmus officially opening it.
Siya Kolisi Residence – More Than Just a Name
Kolisi, the man who lifted the Webb Ellis Cup twice, is a symbol of leadership, resilience and humility. From growing up in Zwide township to leading the Boks to glory, his story is one that inspires many young South Africans.
According to NWU Council chairperson Bert Sorgdrager, naming the residence after Kolisi is about more than just honouring a sportsman – it’s about recognising the values he stands for.
“Kolisi’s journey exemplifies the aspirations of many students who face challenges yet strive for excellence,” says Sorgdrager.
NWU principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka, echoes this, saying Kolisi’s legacy should encourage students to make a positive impact on and off the field.
“We love him for his leadership and we have endless respect for the exemplary way he has served South Africa as a global ambassador.”Kolisi will be at NWU to unveil the new name himself, adding even more meaning to the occasion.
Invictus Residence – The Rassie Touch
The new Invictus Residence will be officially opened by Dr Rassie Erasmus, who will also deliver a guest lecture at NWU titled “From the Sidelines to the Spotlight”.The name Invictus (meaning "unconquered" in Latin) holds deep significance. The word is famously linked to the poem by William Ernest Henley, which speaks about resilience and determination – two things that define Rassie’s coaching career.
Dr Rassie, who received an honorary doctorate from NWU in 2023, has always been about building a united and inclusive South Africa through sport. With the Invictus Residence, NWU is creating a space where future sports stars can embody that same fighting spirit.
A Home for Future Champions 🏆
Together, the Siya Kolisi Residence and Invictus Residence will house 104 students – young athletes who will hopefully carry forward the values of two of South Africa’s greatest rugby minds.
NWU is not just renaming buildings; they are creating a culture that encourages leadership, excellence, and unity – qualities both Kolisi and Erasmus have displayed on and off the field.
Come Monday, all eyes will be on Potch as two Springbok greats put their stamp on NWU history.
