The Grade 10 SETH learners recently had the opportunity to visit the Occupational Hygiene department at the NWU Faculty of Health Sciences. This visit was both exciting and informative, offering the learners a chance to see firsthand how to anticipate and mitigate hazards in various environments.
Learning About Sunscreen with UV Beads
One of the highlights of the visit was testing the effectiveness of sunscreen. The learners used "UV beads," which change color when exposed to ultraviolet light. This hands-on activity helped them understand how sunscreen works to protect the skin from harmful UV rays.
Measuring Electromagnetic Waves from Phones
In another engaging session, the learners used specialized instruments to measure the electromagnetic waves emitted by phones. This experiment shed light on everyday exposures and the importance of monitoring these emissions for safety.
A Special Thanks to Dr. Ansulé Bronkhorst and Team
A big thank you goes out to Dr. Ansulé Bronkhorst and her team, who presented the session with so much care and enthusiasm. Their dedication made the experience enjoyable and educational for the learners.
