POTCHEFSTROOM, McArthur Stadium - 21 October, the rhythmic pounding of runners' feet echoed throughout Potchefstroom as the N12 Ultra Marathon came to life.
Drawing an impressive 825 participants, the marathon showcased both a challenging 21km and a dynamic 5km race, with athletes from diverse backgrounds pushing their limits.
The Race
The 21km segment was dominated by 22-year-old Boipelo Seopongwe, who clinched the top spot with his dedication and rigorous training regimen. "The course was both flat and inviting, perfectly complementing my training efforts," he reflected.

Medals
Medals, a testament to the runners' grit and determination, were awarded by Mr. George Marindi, the Acting Chief Director Sports and Recreation at ACSR.
Adding a touch of inspiration to the event was the presence of the 2023 Comrades Marathon winner, Tete Dijana. Not only did he participate, but he also stood alongside the champions, congratulating them on their achievements.

Mr. Marindi, reflecting the sentiments of ACSR, expressed his pride in the event, saying, "We are here to witness one of the greatest marathons that ever took place in the North West Province. The N12 Marathon, previously only a 50km stretch from Potchefstroom to Klerksdorp, has now expanded to include today's races."
Mr. Vincent Seboko, Chairperson of the N12 Ultra Marathon, shared his ambitions, "Our aim is to grow the marathon so that it becomes one of the elite Marathons in the country."
Mr. Seboko highlighted the diversity of participation by mentioning that they had participants from as far as Ethiopia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Namibia, Kenya, and even from within South Africa's borders - Durban, Cape Town, Limpopo, Northern Cape.
Mr. Seboko gave the athletic community something to look forward to. "On 04 May 2024, we intend to host our annual race, which will serve as a qualifier to the esteemed Comrades Marathon and 2 Ocean Marathon," he announced.
The N12 Ultra Marathon, with its mix of community spirit and athletic prowess, has firmly positioned itself as a hallmark sporting event in the North West Province.
