Potchefstroom renowned for its athletic training facilities, has become the locus of the next chapter in the evolution of women’s rugby in South Africa.
The Springbok Women's team has chosen this hallowed ground for its rigorous training camp, a strategic move aimed at carving a stellar performance in the upcoming WXV tournament.
Scheduled to begin on the 13th of October, WXV is a groundbreaking three-level competition designed to expand and elevate the profile of women's rugby globally. Hosted in three countries—Dubai, South Africa, and New Zealand—the tournament will feature 27 fixtures and bring together the crests and troughs of talent in women’s rugby.
An Exciting New Era
The introduction of the WXV tournament marks a new era in women's rugby, offering a platform for the Springbok Women to display their finesse, agility, and tactical brilliance. While WXV 2 fixtures will be primarily hosted at Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch and Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, Potchefstroom will play a pivotal role in setting the stage for what's to come.
The Springbok Women's Road to WXV
Interim Head Coach Louis Koen has selected 34 players for the training camp, following an alignment camp in Stellenbosch that concluded last weekend. Among those, 19 players hail from the Bulls Daisies and DHL Western Province, who are fresh off a break following the SA Rugby Women's Premier Division final.
The first training session is set for Tuesday, where they will familiarize themselves with the game plan and integrate strategies for the upcoming tournament. The primary objective, as Koen put it, is "to get onto the same page with regards to the team culture and game plan."
Notable Absences
Chumisa Qawe, who captained the Bok Women at the Rugby Africa Women's Cup, will be absent due to a knee injury. Her absence, along with others due to various injuries, underscores the challenges the team faces in an already demanding competition.
The Potchefstroom Advantage
The NWU Sports Village in Potchefstroom is not just a venue but a crucible where the alchemy of teamwork, strategy, and individual brilliance will be tested. The training facilities here are world-class, befitting a team that aims to make a significant impact on the global stage.
