Potchefstroom Central School (PCS), an English Medium Primary School, proudly celebrated its 100th anniversary. With a rich history dating back to 1903, PCS has been a cornerstone of education in the community, continuously evolving while upholding its core values.
From Humble Beginnings
The school's journey began in 1903 with the Central Schools, which later became the High School for Boys, the High School for Girls, and the Central School. On 1 February 1905, the present High School for Boys opened, and the schools were divided into separate entities.
Milestones in Education
On 23 April 1924, the present Central School was officially opened by Miss E. van Huyssteen, with a dedicated staff and 236 children on the roll. Over the years, PCS saw various principals, including Mr. T. Morris, Mr. J.P. Pretorius, Mr. J.D. Martindale, and Mr. J.J. Watt, each contributing to the school's growth and success.
Music Centre: A Hub for Young Musicians
The PCS Music Centre offers lessons in piano, recorder, flute, guitar, ukulele, and drums/percussion. Music education at PCS not only enhances brain development but also fosters creativity, discipline, and teamwork. Grade 2 learners benefit from group music classes, providing a strong foundation for future practical lessons.
Embracing Values and Excellence
Potchefstroom Central School prides itself on its motto, "I Serve," reflecting its commitment to community service, holistic development of learners, and respect for diverse cultures and religions. The school's vision is to foster excellence in education, encouraging learners to achieve high levels in academics, culture, and sports.
A Century of Memories
To celebrate this milestone, former students and teachers have shared their fond memories of PCS:
Mr. and Mrs. Tolmay: "Our involvement with PCS goes back to 1987. Our children thrived under excellent teachers. PCS has evolved, but the caring, dedicated ethos remains."
Aline Mouton (Williams): "I fondly remember Central from 1968-1974 as a very happy school for me."
Lauren Van Zyl: "Happy birthday Central! May this legacy continue forever and may you grow from strength to strength."
Rose-Marie Malan: "I had the privilege to teach at this wonderful school for 42 years. Happy Birthday dear Central!"
Louis Boshoff: "Educators at PCS have such power to create a future. Thanks for fighting the fight against strong odds. Educators are born, a gift from above."
Looking Forward
As PCS enters its next century, the community is looking forward to maintaining their high standards in education, sport, and community development. We take great pride in the school, its environment, and our country, striving to instill these values in the learners.
