In 1903, The Central Schools, which were government-run, were housed in buildings on the site where the present Police Station now stands. These schools later became the foundation for Potchefstroom Central School, the High School for Boys, and the High School for Girls.
On February 1, 1905, the present High School for Boys was opened, and the Central School was divided into two sections: the High School for Boys with a Preparatory Department, and the Girls’ Secondary School, also with a Preparatory Department. When the High School for Girls moved to its current location in 1914, it retained its Preparatory Department until April 1924, when the present Potchefstroom Central School was officially opened.
The school was inaugurated on April 23, 1924, with Miss E. van Huyssteen as the acting Principal. Mr. T. Morris was appointed as the first permanent Principal in 1925, followed by Mr. J.P. Pretorius in 1933. Over the years, the school continued to grow, adding hostels in 1955 to accommodate 120 students.
Potchefstroom Central School has seen a number of dedicated principals, including Mr. J.J. Watt, who served from 1972 until his retirement in 1996. Mrs. D.M. van Rensburg then took over, serving until 2009, after which Mr. van den Berg was appointed Principal.Potchefstroom Central School has a rich history and remains a cornerstone of the community.
