POTCHEFSTROOM – From the fields of Laerskool M.L Fick to the vast greens of Ireland, young Sebastian Jonker's story is nothing short of inspiring. A Grade 7 pupil, his dedication to rugby has left a significant mark, not just on the game but also on the hearts of many in Potchefstroom.
Born to Play
Sebastian’s relationship with rugby is a deep-rooted one, beginning when he was merely 5 years old. The rugby ball wasn't just a plaything for him; it symbolized a future, a dream. Jorina Lombard, closely associated with the young star, recalls, "It was immediately clear that this wasn’t just a passing phase. Sebastian had genuine talent."
Pandemic Disruptions
Though the worldwide pandemic took away some vital years of gameplay from many young sports enthusiasts, Sebastian used this time to hone his skills and came back stronger.
First Team Selection and then Ireland Beckons
By Grade 6, he was already a part of his school's first team. And 2023? Well, that’s turning out to be Sebastian’s year. He not only made it to the school's 1st rugby team for a consecutive year but was also selected for the prestigious KOSH Invitational team. This means a golden opportunity to represent his school and community in Ireland from December 2-11, 2023.
The Fact of Finances
However, dreams of this magnitude often come with substantial expenses. The estimated cost, inclusive of the tour, passport, clothing, and other necessary costs, rounds up to R58,000.
Jorina Lombard passionately appeals to the Potchefstroom community, "It's not just about sending a boy to Ireland. It's about nurturing talent, about making dreams come true, and most importantly, about coming together as a community for one of our own."
While any sponsorship or financial support is tax-deductible, the real return on investment is witnessing a young, dedicated boy live out his dream on an international platform.
More than a Gesture
For Potchefstroom's community, supporting Sebastian is more than a mere gesture; it’s a reflection of collective hope, pride, and the spirit of togetherness. Those who wish to contribute and become a cornerstone of Sebastian’s journey can contact Jorina Lombard directly at 060 966 3374.
