Early Beginnings
Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom, initially known as Afrikaanse Medium Hoërskool, opened its doors on 19 April 1922. Starting with only 38 learners and three teachers, including acting principal Mr. P.M. van der Lingen, the school began its journey in a small church. On 11 October 1922, Mr. J.C. Pauw took over as the first permanent principal, and Mr. A.J.P. "Koos" Burger joined shortly after as the first permanent teacher. By early 1923, the school had moved to a refurbished iron building and the learner count had grown to nearly 140.
Establishment and Growth
The school's name was changed to Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom on 30 October 1923. The cornerstone of the permanent school building was laid on 10 June 1927, and it was officially opened on 23 February 1928 by Transvaal Administrator Jan H. Hofmeyr. Over the years, the school saw several principals, including Mr. C.H. Steyn, Mr. A.J. du Preez van Wyk, and Mr. J.T. Swart, with the student population growing significantly from 38 in 1922 to 1184 in 2010.
School Identity: Colours and Motto
In 1925, the school’s colours were chosen: black (inspired by Mr. Pauw’s jacket), gold (symbolising Potchefstroom's gold reserves), and burgundy for harmony. The school's badge, designed by Koos Burger, features an eagle symbolising victory and three chain links representing unity, loyalty, and good spirit. The motto "Sapientia Vis Vera" means "Wisdom is true power" and was introduced along with the badge in 1926.
