The National Autism Symposium is back in Potch this year, bringing together a crowd of researchers, parents, healthcare workers, social workers, and of course, autistic adults themselves. If you’ve got an interest in autism or just want to learn more about neurodiversity, this event is a solid option.
What’s It All About?
Running from the 3rd to the 7th of September, the 9th edition of the National Autism Symposium is a blend of online webinars and in-person meet-ups. The heart of it all is happening at North-West University in Potchefstroom. Think of it as a get-together where ideas are shared, and some real change can be made in how autism is understood and supported in South Africa.
This isn’t just for academics; parents, teachers, and even autistic adults are encouraged to join in the conversation. The focus is on using evidence-based approaches, which is just a fancy way of saying that they’re looking at what actually works, both in theory and in practice.
Who Should Be There?
The event is open to pretty much anyone who has an interest in autism. From researchers who want to dive deep into the latest data, to parents who are navigating life with autistic children, everyone’s got a place here. It’s also a platform for autistic adults to have their voices heard, which is crucial in creating a well-rounded dialogue. The organisers are particularly keen on submissions that get people talking – no boring lectures here. They’re all about those lively discussions and hands-on approaches.
The Nitty-Gritty
Mark your calendars for the 3rd to the 7th of September 2024. The main event is on the 7th with in-person sessions, but there are also a variety of online webinars throughout the week, starting from the 3rd. If you can’t make it to Potch, you can still join in virtually – lekker!
The National Autism Symposium is hosted by North-West University in partnership with Autism South Africa (A;SA), and is supported by the South African Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (SA-ACAPAP). It’s a big deal, with some solid backing.
