The sun will shine a little brighter over Potchefstroom come this October, as the renowned Mielieland Bowls Tournament prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary. From humble beginnings to an iconic South African sports event, Mielieland’s legacy promises a tournament like no other this year.
About:
Four decades ago, the visionaries Koos Roos, Piet van Vuuren, Koos Smit, and Dot Smit conceived a tournament that would put Potchefstroom on the map as a bowls haven. Starting with 58 competing teams, it now boasts a significant growth, peaking with 118 teams gracing the greens of Potchefstroom's multiple clubs. Today, only the Potchefstroom Town Club and Potchefstroom Country Club (PCC) remain, the latter acting as the main headquarters for the tournament.
Given the overwhelming response this year, Mielieland has confirmed that the Klerksdorp Bowling Club (KBC) will be included as a third venue. The teams will play on a rotation basis among the Potchefstroom Country Club, Potchefstroom Town Club, and the KBC.
However, time is ticking as only 12 open spots remain for teams. Entries are racing in, and prospective participants are urged to ensure their fees of R2,200.00 per team are settled by 22nd September 2023. To secure your team's place, forward your proof of payment to pccbowls@gmail.com.
But Mielieland is more than just a competition. The camaraderie is palpable, and a highlight is the “lekker gesellige” gathering set for the Saturday evening at the PCC. This event isn’t just about bowls; it's about bringing people together. All teams can look forward to a delightful evening’s braai, complete with musical entertainment. Meat packs are available for purchase, and a range of side dishes will be generously provided by the club.
