As the festive season approaches, the spirit of giving becomes a powerful reminder of the impact compassion can have. At the heart of Potchefstroom, the Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is leading by example, creating opportunities for people and animals to find hope and joy. Here’s how PAWS, with the help of dedicated individuals and businesses, is turning this holiday season into a celebration of giving back.
A New Opportunity for Pollie
Many locals will remember Pollie, the cheerful newspaper seller who always greeted customers with a smile. After losing his job, Pollie—whose real name is Thinus—has been given a new opportunity through PAWS. Starting this December, Pollie will be at the shelter every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 to 15:00.
Known for his warm demeanor and ever-present grin, Pollie will assist visitors in meeting the shelter’s dogs and cats available for adoption. Affectionately nicknamed “Smiley,” he’s thrilled to support PAWS while earning a living. Make a point to visit him and help give both Pollie and the animals the chance they deserve.
A Young Changemaker Takes Action
Empathy knows no age, and young Mechyla is proving just that. Driven by a desire to help PAWS, she has set up an initiative to support the shelter’s furry residents. From 3 to 23 December 2024, Mechyla will be at 43 Peter Mokaba Street, spreading awareness and raising funds for the animals. Her efforts serve as an inspiring example of how small actions can create a big impact.
A Gift That Changes Lives
Generosity comes in many forms, and one such gesture has brought a new lease on life for Chief, a valued member of the PAWS team. Shaun from Le Tour Cycles stepped forward to donate a bicycle, ensuring Chief has reliable transportation to get to work.
This act of kindness has not only lightened Chief’s daily burden but has also reminded everyone at PAWS of the community’s unwavering support.
Gratitude to Families Who Adopt
PAWS sends heartfelt thanks to every family that has opened their homes to adopted animals this year. Each adoption marks a fresh start for a furry friend and fills their new family’s home with unconditional love.
A Successful Annual Golf Day
This year’s PAWS Annual Golf Day was a phenomenal success, thanks to the incredible support from local businesses and individuals. The event brought together animal lovers and community leaders, all rallying for a great cause.
A special thanks goes to the event’s main sponsor, Daisy Business Solutions - North West, along with a long list of contributors who made the day possible. Their generosity highlights the power of community in supporting initiatives like PAWS.
Make This Season Count
The holidays are a time of love and companionship, and PAWS is calling on the community to help give their animals a home for the festive season.
Here’s how you can make a difference:
Adopt: Open your home to a pet in need.
Foster: Provide temporary care for an animal over the holidays.
Donate: Financial contributions and supplies like food, toys, or blankets are always welcome.
Some animals at PAWS have already been sponsored, meaning their adoption fees are fully covered. Visit the shelter to meet these pets or learn more about how you can help.
A Season of Love and Second Chances
This festive season, PAWS invites everyone to join in creating a brighter future for their animals. Whether it’s adopting, fostering, donating, or simply visiting, every act of kindness makes a lasting difference.
