It rained points — and actual rain — at Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds on Monday night as the NWU Eagles stormed to a dominant 52-7 victory over FNB UJ in their Varsity Cup clash.
Delayed Start, but No Slowing Down for NWU ⚡🌧️
Kick-off was delayed due to thunder and lightning, but once the action got going at 7:55pm, it was all NWU Eagles. From the first whistle, the Eagles made their intentions clear — semi-final dreams are still alive.
By halftime, the Eagles were already 26-0 up, and there was no way back for UJ from there.
Forwards Lead the Charge 💪
It was a night dominated by the big men up front. The NWU forwards took control early and never let go, laying the platform for a try-fest.
Chyle van Zyl stole the show with three tries, while his brother Tian van Zyl added a seven-pointer to the tally. The Eagles pack was unstoppable.
Stephan Krugel, Guhan du Toit, and Stephen Taylor also crossed the whitewash — all forwards — showing just how dominant the Eagles were up front.
Dream Debut for MJ Mostert 🎯
Debutant flyhalf MJ Mostert kept the scoreboard ticking, slotting 11 points on debut — a calm and confident performance from the youngster in tough, wet conditions.
UJ Left in Trouble 😬
UJ could only manage a late consolation try in the dying minutes — too little, too late. The loss now sees UJ slipping into the relegation zone, while NWU keeps their semi-final hopes alive with this convincing win.
Next Stop: Semi-Finals in Sight 🦅
With this performance, NWU showed they’re ready for the business end of the competition. It was one-way traffic in Potch, and the Eagles fans definitely had reason to celebrate.
