A Retreat along the Vaal River
As a family deeply rooted in the love of the outdoors – fishing, hunting, camping, and various sports activities – the Smit family found their haven along the Vaal River.
Situated a mere 24km from both Parys and Vanderbijlpark, and a 60km traveling distance from Potchefstroom makes it the ideal location with close proximity to these larger towns.
Where the name 'Blinkwater' came from
The name 'Blinkwater' came to rise during a evening stroll by the river. As the sun set, casting a serene glow on the water through the trees, the moon illuminated the absolute stillness, giving rise to the name 'Blinkwater'.
Over the past decade, constant improvements have been made to enhance the guest experience. The Smit family also introduced Merinos to keep the grass short on the property, a experience enhancer especially for the kids coming from city.
Climate
Blinkwater experiences warm summers with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. Towering Blue Gum trees provide shade along the riverbank.
In winter, temperatures can drop near freezing, and occasionally as low as -10 degrees. However, the chalets are equipped to provide warmth even on the coldest days.
Relaxation Attractions and Activities
For summer, there's a clean swimming pool, a sandpit, and a playground for the little ones. The children's party facility is available for booking and promises a fun-filled time.
Along the river, two braai places and a fire pit is available to add to the relaxation options.
Within a two-kilometer radius around Blinkwater there is cafes, petrol stations, and a hardware store. Basic necessities, including meat and fishing gear, can be purchased nearby.
The location on the edge of the Vredefort Dome Conservation Area offers a haven for long-distance runners and cyclists, with ideal routes around Fochville, Parys, Potchefstroom, and Ertjiesberg.
Fishing is another main attraction as the waters here are not pressured by fisherman because of Blinkwater being private property, so fishing is very good.
They are also part of a conservation strategy practicing in catch and release to help save the small mouth yellowfish numbers of the greater Vaal River ecosystem.
Do not forget your binoculars or camera as this wild part of the Vaal River really produces a lot of fascinating animal and bird species like otters, monitor lizards, fish eagles and kingfishers to name a few.
