Established in 1962 and officially opened in 1963, Over de Voor Men’s Residence holds a proud place in NWU Potchefstroom’s history. Known simply as “Overs,” the residence is steeped in tradition and renowned for its sense of brotherhood, pride, and resilience. From producing Springbok athletes and Olympic stars to nurturing top executives, Overs has consistently shaped exceptional individuals.
The residence derives its name from Prof. Johannes (Joon) van Rooy, an influential figure at the university. Its nickname, “Over de Voor,” originates from the sluice-way separating the residence from the main campus in 1962.

16 Days of Activism Campaign
Over de Voor proudly supports the global 16 Days of Activism Campaign against violence toward women and children, held annually from 25 November to 10 December.
The residence honors the strength and contributions of women who uplift and enrich their activities. Overs men are inspired to create a world where every woman feels valued and protected. This campaign is not just about raising awareness but celebrating the incredible women who empower and inspire the residence every day.
