Established in 1978, Villagers Men’s Residence holds the distinction of being the oldest town residence on NWU’s Potchefstroom campus. Created to address the growing need for housing for students living in town, Villagers has maintained its identity and traditions, standing apart as the only town residence to retain its original name.
Built on a foundation of Christian values, Villagers provides an environment where residents are encouraged to balance their academic responsibilities with sports, cultural activities, community engagement, and a vibrant student life. This holistic approach has solidified its reputation as a community that fosters growth, pride, and excellence.
Symbolism and Values
The winged horse Pegasus, rooted in Greek mythology, serves as Villagers’ emblem. In legend, Pegasus created a fountain that bestowed divine knowledge upon those who drank from it. This emblem represents the core values of Villagers:
Pride in the Creator.
Pride in Pegasus and the residence.
Pride in oneself and fellow residents.
These values are central to the Villagers ethos, shaping its residents into individuals who strive for excellence while remaining grounded in faith and community.
