Fighting for a Cause: Dricus Du Plessis Inspires at NWU Potch Fundraiser

This past weekend, Potchefstroom witnessed an event unlike any other as UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus Du Plessis made a special appearance at the NWU Potchefstroom SCC Fundraiser. With a jam-packed lineup of activities, including live music, an exclusive memorabilia auction, and a chance to hear from the champion himself, the event successfully brought the community together in support of a great cause.

A Night to Remember


The weekend kicked off with a charity gala on Friday evening, setting the tone for the fundraising efforts. Attendees gathered for an unforgettable night of inspiration and unity, where contributions poured in for NWU students struggling with outstanding tuition fees. Organized by NWU, the gala was a heartfelt celebration of generosity and support, with special recognition given to Dricus Du Plessis for his commitment to the cause.


The Main Event


Taking place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at RAG Farm / JOOL, Potchefstroom, the fundraiser opened its gates early, with attendees eagerly lining up to take part in the activities. The event saw an impressive turnout of approximately 600 people.

Exciting Highlights from the Day:


  • Battle of the Bands (09:00 - 11:00) – Local bands rocked the stage, vying for the title of Potchefstroom’s best musical act. The fierce competition provided a lively start to the day.

  • Memorabilia Auction (11:00 - 12:00) – Exclusive items, including a signed UFC fighting glove, old school jerseys, and a special portrait of Dricus Du Plessis, were auctioned off to enthusiastic bidders.

  • Dricus Du Plessis Exclusive Appearance (12:00 - 13:00) – The moment everyone was waiting for. Dricus shared his journey to the top, insights into his training, and his aspirations for the future.

  • Food, Drinks & Community Spirit – Throughout the event, food vendors provided delicious options, while the lively atmosphere ensured that attendees enjoyed every moment.


Giving Back: The Impact of the Event


The primary goal of the fundraiser was to assist NWU students burdened by unpaid tuition fees. Thanks to overwhelming community support, the event raised approximately R200,000 through ticket sales and the memorabilia auction.

A Tribute to Champions


One of the standout moments of the weekend was the unveiling of a striking graffiti mural of Dricus Du Plessis outside Oudebrug Estate. Curated by Century 21 Potchefstroom, the artwork is a powerful tribute to strength, perseverance, and the fighting spirit that defines champions like Dricus. The mural serves as a lasting symbol of the impact he has on South Africans both inside and outside the Octagon.
