From classrooms to sports fields, Potchefstroom’s schools have once again proved why they’re considered some of the top performers in the North West. This past week saw an impressive variety of achievements – from academic excellence and sporting success to cultural brilliance and technological advancement. Here’s your weekly catch-up on what’s been happening across our local schools:

🟡 Laerskool Mooirivier – Academic Stars Set the Tone
The first term of 2025 ended on a high note for Mooirivier Primary, where a group of dedicated learners achieved an average of 85% or higher. 📖💪
These academic achievements reflect not only the learners' focus and hard work, but also the strong support of their teachers, parents, and school staff. It’s proof that Mooirivier values excellence both in and outside the classroom.



🟢 Potchefstroom Gimnasium – Gimmies Making Waves
Gimmie golfers brought their A-game at the NWU Prestige Sports Series. The junior team claimed first place in their division, while the senior team secured tenth place overall. A solid showing that highlights the talent and depth in Gimmie golf.

🏐 Netball Teams Battle in NWU Semi-Finals
Several Gimmie netball teams competed in the semis with standout performances. The u.15A team won 44–19 against Montana, and the u.16A team beat Volkies 30–24. Tough competition, but plenty of determination and team spirit on display.

🧠 Language Skills on Show at Idiom Festival
Gimmie learners impressed at the Woordwarrel Idiom Festival, showing off their command of idiomatic Afrikaans. Winners included Zanica & Ricardo Bechaz, JP van Straaten, Ricus Jansen van Vuuren, and overall winner Ezelle Ehlers. A great celebration of language, wit, and creativity.

💛 Ferdinand Postma – Proud on the Field and in the Classroom
🏉 First Team Dominates Milner
Ferdies’ first rugby team stormed to a 41–5 victory over Milner. The u.15 team drew 7–7 in a tough, closely fought match. The boys gave it their all, proudly wearing the Ferdies jersey and showing grit from start to finish.

🍬 Sweet Approach to Financial Literacy
Ferdies Grade 9 SETH learners explored personal finance and budgeting in a fun and practical way – using sweets as part of the lesson! A big thanks to Ms. Maritza Vergottini for leading the engaging session. It was learning with a twist!

🏑 Ferdies Hockey Shows Their Class Against Volkies – 10-0 Victory! 🔥
Ferdies’ first team boys’ hockey side delivered a dominant performance on Tuesday, 22 April, when they defeated Volkies’ second team with an overwhelming 10-0 scoreline. 💥💙💛

🦅 Volkies Making Headlines – Here and Abroad
🏏 Big Plays at the LPL in Australia
Two Volkies stars, Louis van Wyk and Hermann Hesse, made waves at the LPL in Australia. Louis scored 46 runs off just 34 balls for the Queensland Griffons, while Hermann took a hat-trick for the Tasmanian Devils – excellent performances on the international stage. 🌍🏏🇿🇦

🏆 Cricket Awards at NW Function
Eduan van der Merwe (u.17) and Olefa Padi (u.16) were recognised as players of the tournament during the provincial week. On top of that, Volkies’ u.19 team took home the NW league trophy – a proud moment for the school’s cricket programme.

Die komende naweek is dit weer tyd vir groot sportaksie wanneer die NWU-reeks sy finale fase bereik – en die Volkies is reg vir die uitdaging. Ons tennis-, hokkie- en netbalspanne sal almal in aksie wees, en ons hou styf duime vas vir elke span wat hul skool se naam met trots gaan uitdra. 💪

⚽️ HTS Potchefstroom – Soccer Season Kicks Off Strong
HTS Potch started their soccer league campaign with wins from both the u.16 and u.19 teams against Ashton John’s. The juniors won 3–1 and the seniors held on for a close 3–2 win. A solid start to what promises to be an exciting season. 👏⚽️🔥

📚 Emmies Celebrate World Book Day in Style
On 23 April, Emmies learners transformed into their favourite book characters to celebrate World Book Day. With inspiration from LAPA and Penguin Random House SA, the classrooms became magical story worlds. There were prizes for best-dressed learners and plenty of reading fun. 📖🎉

🏉 M.L. Fick Prepares for League Season with Friendly Wins
The boys from M.L. Fick showed strong form in their rugby friendlies against Wolmaransstad. These matches helped gear the teams up for the upcoming league, and the results showed that their hard work in training is paying off. 🏉👏

🐣 Asjassies Pre-Primary Brings the Easter Fun
The little ones at Asjassies had an “egg-citing” time with their Easter Bunny Draw event. There were colouring competitions, chocolate prizes, and top fundraising efforts from the Bunnies and Smurfies classes. As always, the school’s community spirit was on full display. 🐰🍬🎨

🤖 NWU AI Hub Opens – Tech Gets a Boost
After a year of preparation, North-West University officially opened its AI Hub, focused on ethical and responsible AI. Students are already receiving training in this fast-growing field, and the hub positions NWU as a key player in South Africa’s tech future. 🧠📈

🏐 Saints Netball Teams Off to a Winning Start in NW League! 🙌
A Clean Sweep at Saints Astro
On Tuesday, 22 April, Saints Christian School’s netball teams took to the court at the Saints Astro with energy and determination – and the results speak for themselves! Our U/9, U/11, U/12 and U/13 teams each walked away with a win against Potchefstroom Primary in the opening round of the North-West League. 🤩
From young readers to rising rugby stars, future tech leaders to cricket champions – Potchefstroom’s schools continue to raise the bar.
