Small SUV, Big Legend: The Suzuki Jimny may be compact, but it’s an off-road icon with a loyal following worldwide. This tough little 4x4 first hit the roads (and trails) in 1970 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020 – with over three million units sold globally by that time. From the beginning, the Jimny rewrote the 4×4 rulebook by proving that bigger isn’t always better in the rough stuff.

Over four generations, Suzuki stuck to the Jimny’s winning formula: a lightweight body-on-frame trucklet with serious off-road chops and a personality all its own. No wonder the Jimny enjoys a cult-like following in South Africa, with many enthusiast groups dedicated to these “off-road monsters”. Suzuki’s own Andre Venter calls the Jimny “a legend in its own time,” noting how its reliability, genuine off-road ability, modern comforts, and low running costs have only bolstered its reputation. In short, this pint-sized SUV has grown into the compact 4x4 to beat, both on the trail and in the hearts of its fans blog.suzukiauto.co.za.
A Brief History of a Little Off-Road Hero
The Jimny’s origin story is a testament to Suzuki’s innovative spirit. It began when Suzuki acquired the plans of an obscure 1960s micro-4x4 (the HopeStar ON360) and transformed them into the LJ10 (Light Jeep) – the first Jimny, launched in 1970. That first-gen model was tiny (powered by a 360 cc two-stroke engine) and about as basic as it gets, but it immediately impressed buyers with its go-anywhere toughness.
The tough-as-nails LJ10 could run alongside big off-roaders like the Toyota Land Cruiser in the wild, yet it was far cheaper to buy and run. Subsequent iterations in the 1970s and ’80s (LJ50, LJ80, and SJ series) added slightly bigger engines and improved durability while keeping weight low and capability high, staying true to Suzuki’s philosophy that a small 4x4 can conquer big challenges. By 1998, the third, generation Jimny arrived (the first to actually wear the Jimny name globally), bringing coil-spring suspension and more creature comforts to broaden its daily drivability.
It remained largely unchanged for two decades, quietly building a fanbase. Then in 2018, Suzuki introduced the current fourth-generation Jimny, a retro-styled box on wheels that sparked a craze. Demand has been so intense that Suzuki could barely keep up, a scenario reminiscent of the Jimny’s 1970s popularity boom blog.suzukiauto.co.za. In South Africa especially, since the Gen4’s launch in 2018, the Jimny has been selling as fast as Suzuki can import them drivesouthafrica.com. The stage was set for the legend to grow even further.
Big Features in a Bite-Sized Package
Don’t let its size fool you, the Jimny is built for adventure. Under its charmingly boxy exterior lies a serious off-road machine. Every Jimny rides on a robust ladder-frame chassis, a design normally found in full-size trucks, which provides rigidity and durability on rough terrain. It also boasts AllGrip Pro 4WD with high-range and low-range gearing, allowing the driver to switch from two-wheel drive to 4x4 on the fly and tackle technical obstacles with ease.
Ground clearance of 210 mm and ample suspension articulation mean the Jimny can clamber over rocks and ruts that would stop ordinary crossovers in their tracks. A peppy 1.5 L petrol engine may sound small, but it delivers enough torque to confidently haul the Jimny up steep hills or through loose sand blog.suzukiauto.co.za.
And thanks to its light weight and compact dimensions, the Jimny is as sure-footed as a mountain goat on narrow trails and slippery slopes. Suzuki has even engineered a clever brake-based limited slip differential system that automatically shuffles power to the wheels with grip, helping the Jimny scramble through mud and sand without needing locking diffs drivesouthafrica.com. On the road, the Jimny is no sports car, but it makes every drive feel like an adventure.
Owners love the nimble, laid-back vibe that comes with piloting such a quirky 4x4. Modern iterations haven’t skimped on comfort either: the latest Jimny offers a surprisingly refined ride, a comfortable cabin with touchscreen infotainment, air conditioning, and other amenities, and it remains relatively affordable to own and run. It’s this blend of toughness and charm that gives the Jimny its almost cult-like appeal.

The New 5-Door Jimny: More to Love
For years, Jimny fans only had one format to choose from, a tiny three-door, four-seater mini SUV. That’s part of its charm, but it does limit passenger and cargo space. In 2023, Suzuki answered the call for more room by unveiling the Jimny 5-door. Enthusiasts rejoiced (the rumors had been swirling for ages) as the stretched Jimny made its global debut at Auto Expo 2023 in India, and Suzuki soon confirmed it for South Africa.
The new model adds two extra doors and a significant stretch in wheelbase (an extra 340 mm between the axles, and 360 mm longer overall than the standard Jimny), greatly improving rear-seat access and boot space. Importantly, Suzuki’s engineers didn’t mess with the formula that makes a Jimny a Jimny. Under the skin, the 5-door has the same engine, 4WD system, ladder-frame underpinnings and off-road prowess as the 3-door.
So you still get the low-range gearbox, 210 mm clearance, and nimble handling – just now in a more family-friendly package. The idea is to bring the Jimny’s go-anywhere, do-anything appeal to a wider audience, including adventurers who need a bit more practicality. With the extra space, you can load up more gear for an overland trip, or even fold the front seats flat into a makeshift bed for camping, as one South African showcase demonstrated.
The 5-door Jimny began turning heads at events like the Festival of Motoring 2023, where Suzuki showed it off in person to eager crowds blog.suzukiauto.co.za. By late 2023 and 2024, this longer Jimny started hitting the market, and it’s poised to have a big impact on the Jimny community. Now owners can bring along more friends or family on trail outings, and those who hesitated at the Jimny’s tiny size have a more spacious option.

Yet, in true Jimny fashion, it remains a lightweight, agile mountain goat, just one with room for a few extra passengers on the ride. The 5-door variant ensures that the Jimny’s legacy continues to grow, proving that the little 4x4 can evolve with the times without losing its soul.
